CARLOVIAN
TRADITIONAL MUSIC CLUB
Dia
dhaoibh go léir!!
I hope you had
a brilliant summer and that the winter
ahead will be kind to you. During the
summer, I met many musicians who have
graced the stage of our club here in
Carlow and most have remembered the night
as one of their favourite gigs. We have an
array of outstanding musicians lined up
for the months ahead and hope that you
will continue to support us in our efforts
to bring these people to Carlow. I realise
that it can be difficult to make it out on
a cold or wet Friday night after a hard
weeks work, but hope you will try your
best as we need a good turnout for
financial, but more importantly,
atmosphere reasons.
We start the
year with two of the up-and-coming stars
of the traditional music world. Some of
you may remember the fabulous night we had
some years ago with Dave Munnelly from
Mayo. We are delighted to welcome his
brother, Ciarán to the club this
November. He is an accomplished flute
player and a dynamic bodhran player who
has been playing music since the age of
seven. He has played and toured with some
of
Ireland
’s
finest musicians including Matt Molloy, Máirtín
O’Connor, Kieran Goss and Mary Black. He
is a founding member of the Dave Munnelly
band and has recorded two albums with
them: “Swing” in 1999 and “By
Heck” which was nominated for Irish
Music Magazine’s “Album of the Year”
award 2005. He is currently a fourth year
student of the BA Irish Music and Dance at
the
Irish
World
Academy
.
Aidan O’Donnell is from
Dunkineely, southwest Donegal, a place
steeped in musical tradition. He has been
acknowledged as one of the foremost
emerging exponents of the fiery
Southwest Donegal
style of fiddle
playing. He learned his music from
Seamus Sweeney and through his
extended family, the famous
Campbells
. His music influences
include Siobhán Peoples, John Carty and
Frankie Gavin. He has performed on
international stages including the Royal
Scottish Concert Hall, Farmleigh House,
Dublin
and has broadcast
several performances on national and
international radio and television. He has
performed with Altan, Mícheál O’Súilleabháin
and The Chieftains.
I had the
pleasure of playing with these two lads at
the Portglenone festival in September and
was blown away by their enthusiasm and
energy. They are also great fun and this
comes across in their music. I hope you
will come along to meet and hear them. All
the big-name musicians started with the
smaller gigs and people still say, “I
heard him back in …!!”. Here’s your
chance to get in at the start(ish) of
these lad’s carreers!!
The gig is next
Friday, 3rd November, 2006, in The
Carlovian Restaurant,
Tullow
Street, Carlow.
It starts at
9.30pm
and the admission is €15. As usual,
because the gig is unamplified, we insist
on silence while the musicians are
performing. So, until then, slán.
