Carlovian Traditional Music Club

Hello again!!

Firstly, a big thank you to all who came to our last concert featuring Peter Horan and Gerry Harrington. It was a beautiful night of music and fun, and a special treat to have Peter in town.

Our next concert is next Friday, 3rd March, 2006. We bring together three mighty musicians from around Ireland to play for us. Paudie O’Connor is from the Sliabh Luachra region of Kerry and is one of the finest accordion players in Ireland at the moment. His style of music reflects his background with an array of dazzling polkas, slides and reels. He has published a tutor manual and CD of box playing and is in great demand at music festivals and concerts. I think he will bring an unusual style of music to Carlow.

John O’Brien is a young piper from Dublin and comes from a dynasty of musicians. We have already heard his brother, Mick, another piper, who played here last year. His brothers, Tom and Andrew are also noted fiddle players and Donncha was a fab tin-whistle player until his death some years ago. He has been busy jet-setting with Riverdance but is back in Ireland at the moment and we anticipate a good night of music and craic from him.

Paul De Grae is the guitarist with the boys for the night. He needs no introduction to anyone familiar with Traditional Music as he has played on some of the best recordings made over the last decade or so. He lives in Tralee where he is to be found most nights playing his music unless he is touring some far-off place wowing people with his dexterity!!

So there you have it. The usual time (9.30) and place (Upstairs, Carlovian) and the admission is €15- we had rather a small turn-out last time so this cost must remain. Please note that talking during performance is “frowned upon”!! We hope you can come along and share in a magical musical night.

          Slán, Dave.

PS Don’t forget “Providence” in Leighlinbridge Parish Centre on April 8th. This is part of the Carlow Fleadh and will raise funds (hopefully) for the Leinster Fleadh which comes to Carlow in July. They are a great band and I will let you know more about them closer to the time.
