Carlovian Traditional Music Club

Dia dhuit!

Happy 2006 to you and yours. I hope things are going great so far. It’s a big year for trad music here in Carlow so I hope you will find something of interest in the events organised.

We start this year’s run of folk club gigs with a very special night. Coming to Carlow is Peter Horan (flute) and Gerry Harrington (fiddle). Peter has been described as a living legend. He is a link with Ireland’s uncluttered musical past and his style of playing and flavour of character is relaxed but full of feeling. He grew up in the Killavil area of Sligo and that being fiddle country, his flute playing echoes that instrument, making it quite unique. He is welcomed with affection wherever he plays and I know that you will want to meet and hear this exceptional octogenarian when he comes to play in Carlow.

Gerry Harrington makes a welcome return to our club and anyone who heard him play a couple of years back will want to listen to this talented fiddle player again. He has recorded many fine albums and toured extensively over the past twenty years or so. He gets a very resonant tone from his instrument and as well as lively dance music, Gerry has a special talent in the playing of our finest airs. He hails from Kenmare, Co. Kerry and can put that certain “twist” into the tunes.

This promises to be a mighty night of music and craic-both these lads are well known for their wit- so I hope you can make it along. It’s in the usual place (upstairs in “The Carlovian”) and at the usual time (9.30pm) on Friday 3rd February and I’m afraid the new charge applies again (€15)!

Two more things which may interest you. The following Friday (10th February 2006), there will be a special concert in Leighlinbridge featuring two very talented and glamorous ladies!!! Cora and Breda Smith are from Co. Mayo and are fresh from their travels with Riverdance and Lord of the Dance. They have a new album out and will play in Leighlinbridge with their band as a fundraiser for the Leinster Fleadh which hits Carlow in July. Tickets are €15 and I have a supply of them if you want to guarantee your seat!!Last thing!!- Carlow Fleadh will be in Leighlinbridge on April 8th-9th. The featured band this year is Providence who will perform on Saturday 8th in the Parish Centre. More about this anon, but keep that night free!

Till we meet, slán..Dave (086 0877115)
