Brief Competition Rules

  • All competitions shall be traditional in character

  • Age reckoned from 1st January of Fleadh year.

  • Competitors must compete in own age group in solo competitions.

  • Please ensure that you are entered in the correct age group.

  • Electronic or amplified instruments are not allowed, except electronic piano in the Ceili Band competitions

  • Only competitors resident in Co. Carlow, are eligible to represent Co. Carlow in solo competition at the Leinster Fleadh.

  • The decision of the Adjudicator is final in all competitions.

  • If the competitor is a member of a Branch of Comhaltás, then he/she must enter in the Branch name.

  • The following class of tune is allowed:
    Reel, Jig (single, double, slip), Slide, Polka, Hornpipe, March, Set Dance.

  • Solo Competitors must perform the following:
    U-10, U-12, 12-15     2 Tunes
    15-18                          3 Tunes
    O-18                           4 Tunes (including 1 slow air)

  • Solo and Ensemble Competitions are held in the following Age Groups:
    U-10 (Non-Qualifying Event)
    U-12
    12-15
    15-18
    O-18

  • Slow Air Competition
    U-12    2 Airs
    12-15   3 Airs
    15-18   3 Airs (See Clár)
    O-18    (Adjudicator will select 3 from 8 submitted)

  • Singing (The following abbreviations are used S = Slow, L = Lively)
    U-12     2 Songs  (1 S/1L) of your own choice
    12-15   Competitor to submit list of 4 songs (2 S/2L). Competitor will sing 2 songs, 1 own choice
                and one choice of Adjudicator
    15-18   Same as 12-15
    O-18   Competitor to submit list of 6 songs (4 S/2L). Competitor will sing 2 songs, 1 own choice
                and one choice of Adjudicator

  • Newly composed ballad must not have been sung previously at any Fleadh.

Air (Slow or lively), Jig (double, single, slip), Slide, Reel, Polka, Hornpipe, March, Set Dance 

   

Grade (Age as of January 1, 2007)

 
 

a = Under 12 years old

b = 12-15

c = 15-18

d = 18 or over  

 

Solo Competition

 
 

Grades "a" & "b": One tune from each of TWO music classes. Grade "c": One tune from each of THREE classes.  Grade "d": One tune from each of FOUR classes, but must include a Slow Air in the case of fiddle, tin whistle, concert flute, and uilleann pipes.

Solo Slow Airs

   

Grade "a" - two airs

Grades "b" & “c” - three airs

Grade "d" – adjudicators will select three from list of eight airs to be submitted

Ensembles

 

Duets and Trios:  Grades "a" and "b", one tune from each of TWO classes.  Grade "c". One tune from each of THREE classes.  Grade "d". One tune from each of FOUR classes. 

 

Ceili Bands: (Minimum of 5 members, maximum of 10)  Grades "a" and "b": One tune from each of TWO classes.  Grade "c": Two reels in succession, plus one tune from each of two other classes.  Grade "d": two reels in succession, plus a maximum of two tunes played in succession from each of three other classes listed above.  In the event of a recall in Grade "d" (Senior) a Band may not repeat any of the tunes it has played in its first performance.

 

Grupai Cheoil: (Minimum of 4 members, maximum of 20 members) Own choice of music for a maximum of 6 - 8 minutes but with a limit of ten minutes on stage.  Whistlers and lilters may be included, as well as players of bodhran and bones, but piano and drums are not permitted. Efforts should be made to play tunes other than jigs, reels and hornpipes, e.g. slow airs, set dances, old marches, harp music etc.  Attention should also be given to instrumentation arrangements and presentation of the music.  A list of music pieces in the order to be played , e.g. slip jig, march, etc., shall be submitted by each group leader to the adjudicators prior to the performance.

 

Accompaniment: This competition is restricted to the following instruments: piano, harp, guitar, bouzouki-type instruments. The adjudication is on the accompaniment only.

Solo Traditional Singing and Other Competitions

 

Grade "a": Each competitor shall choose and sing TWO full songs-slow and lively. No list of songs is required in this age group.  Grades "b" and "c": Competitors shall submit to the adjudicator a list of FOUR songs-two slow and two lively. Each competitor shall select one song, the adjudicator will then select the second song from the other category.  Grade "d": Competitors submit to the adjudicator a list of SIX songs-four slow and two lively. This list must indicate which songs are classed as lively. The competitor shall select one song from either category, and the adjudicator will then select the second song from the other category. 

   

Newly Composed Ballad - must not previously have been sung at any fleadh prior to the current year.  Lyrics for newly composed songs must be submitted in writing with entry and must accompany results to All-Ireland level.  Songs in waltz time should be avoided.
