CARLOVIAN
TRADITIONAL MUSIC CLUB
Diarmuid O'Brien & Dan Brouder,
Oct 12th, 2007
A
Chara,
I
hope you had a great summer and are ready for some
music to ease your way into winter. We will try to
provide suitable stimulation should this be the case!
We are about to begin our 7th season of the
Carlovian folk club and hope this run proves as
successful as the years to date.
The
first night of the new series features the best of
music from Co. Limerick. I recently bought a CD of
Diarmuid O’Brien, fiddle-player from Glin. He has
recorded some beautiful music with a range of
accordion players from the area. I have known Diarmuid
for some time and have been impressed with his music,
so I was delighted to hear his recording. He is a
regular at festivals throughout the country and brings
his unique rhythm and style wherever he plays. This
tribute was paid to Diarmuid in the national
press-‘The strong musical and singing tradition of
West Limerick is well documented and respected the
world over. It is from this background that Diarmuid’s
music has been crafted. An old head on young
shoulders,’ conscious and respectful of the music of
West Limerick, for here was the little ‘fatherland’ of
trailblazers, Paddy Taylor (flute player and
composer), Martin Mulvihill, (fiddle player and
teacher), Con Greaney (singer), Patrick Ahern (fiddle
player), and Tulla native, Seán Aerach Ó Seanacháin,
author of the great drinking song ‘An Buachaill Caol
Dubh’
Playing on the night with Diarmuid will be one of the
featured box players on his CD. Dan Brouder is no
stranger to Carlow, having played and adjudicated at
the Carlow Fleadh. He has played at a couple of
concerts here too. Dan has that wonderful rhythm of
Sliabh Luachra and is much sought after for
recordings. He has a wicked sense of humour, so there
should be a laugh or two to be had that night. Dan’s
playing ability is beyond doubt - he has two
all-Ireland titles to his name as well as many other
awards.
As
yet, I don’t have the name of their accompanist, but
am assured he/she will be top class!!
This
gig takes place in the Carlovian top bar on Friday,
October 12th. It begins at 9.30pm and
admission is still €15. I hope you can come along. I
know it’s a yearly cry, but if the numbers aren’t
there, we cannot continue. It’s been great so far, so
if you can, keep up the attendance and we will
continue the search for great music to bring to
Carlow. If you know of anyone who may be interested in
this type of night, could you pass on the word and we
can include them on our mailing list.
Slán go fóill,
Dave. |
