Greetings,
Trad-lovers!
Another great night in the Carlovian Folk Club is
approaching. On Friday, March 11th, 2006, we are
lucky to host two of Ireland’s finest musicians here in
Carlow. What makes this combination more interesting,
however is that both men were born in the U.S.A.
Jesse Smith was born in Baltimore (America!) and
has a fine musical pedigree- his mother herself a well
known musician. He shaped his fiddle-playing in the states
and some years ago moved to Ireland where he now resides.
Jesse played for some years with that great band, Danú,
and features on some of their best recordings as well as
releasing a brilliant solo CD himself some years back. He
also recorded one of my favourite albums with two
musicians familiar to us here in Carlow- Harry Bradley and
John Blake. They call themselves the Tap Room Trio and as
mentioned, I highly recommend their album.
Jesse will be joined on the night by Colm Gannon,
box-player extraordinaire from Boston originally. I first
met Colm in Boston in 1996, while he was but a lad gaining
a reputation for his inventive playing and
huge repertoire of tunes. He now lives in Spiddal,
Co. Galway and is highly sought after by musicians and
audiences for his beautiful music. He has just completed
his solo CD which should be released soon. If you
haven’t heard of Colm up to this, you will once this one
is launched.
Jesse and Colm have being playing together for
years in sessions, concerts etc. and I think they will
provide us here in Carlow with yet another memorable night
of traditional Irish music.
