Carlow
Fleadh returns to the beautiful
village
of
Leighlinbridge
on the 30th March
-
1st April 2007
.
This event, which has grown in stature over
the last four years, now attracts musicians,
singers and music-lovers from all over
Ireland
.
We have, over the years, concentrated on
bringing visitors from
Northern
Ireland
and this year is no different. Our main
concert features a selection of
Belfast
’s
finest musicians and singers. There is a good
selection of sessions in the local pubs and
the local primary schools host our Fleadh
competitions which showcases the best of
Carlow’s young talent. We open our fleadh
with the launch of a new teenage traditional
music performance group- a talented troupe
picked from the most accomplished young
musicians, singers and dancers from all over
Carlow.
The
official opening takes place in the Lord
Bagenal Hotel on Friday night, 30th
March at
9pm
.
We are proud of our new venture, Carlow’s
own teenage trad group, and they will play at
a wine reception to open festivities. All are
welcome to come along to hear them play their
first public performance and stay around for a
mega-session of music in the same venue.
We
hold our children’s competitions on
Saturday, beginning at
10.30am
.
These competitions are open to children in Co.
Carlow and they are the first stage that many
of the children will perform on. The afternoon
competitions pick out Carlow’s
representatives for the Leinster Fleadh, to be
held in Athboy, Co. Meath in July. There is
the usual meeting of the Fleadh musicians in Meaney’s
pub at
4.30pm
.
This is always a great session with visitors
and locals renewing friendships forged over
the years. On Saturday night we hold our
annual Fleadh concert. “A Taste of
Belfast” is the title of this year’s
concert and, as the title suggests, we present
the cream of
Belfast
artistes who will play and sing the finest of
Belfast
music. Admission is €15 for adults and €10
for U-18s and unemployed and starts at
8.30pm
.
Also performing on the night will be Carlow
Young Fiddlers, a group that has opened many
concerts in Leighlinbridge. This event takes
place in Leighlinbridge Parish Centre. There
are two other sessions in Brennan’s
and Kelly’s that night. These are the best spots to meet, greet and
listen to the finest musicians the fleadh has
to offer. They start at
9.30pm
.
We
relax a little on the Sunday after the hectic
schedule the previous night. The musicians
meet up again in The Garrison pub at
1.30pm
to take up the musical baton again. The action
moves to Rainbows
bar at
5.30pm
where any musicians remaining (and able!!)
will play till the fleadh finishes.
So
there you have it. We feel there is something
there in our programme to suit most with an
interest in traditional music, song and dance.
Come along and join in the fun and, if you
cannot, tell someone you know who might!! If
you need any more information on any events or
want to order tickets for the concert, call
Dave at 059 9140979 or e-
mail
dave@carlowtrad.com.
We look forward to your company.
